Igor Lipinski - Letters

GENRE: Classical, Experimental, Soundtrack, Piano

Label: Bandcamp
Release date: 2011
Total running time: 00:30:23

Igor Lipinski is a 24-year-old concert pianist and renowned magician from Poland. He received his Master's Degree in Piano Performance & Literature at the Eastman School of Music. Igor travels with his one-man show that combines both music & magic into a unique, theatrical event.
"Dear Visitor,
I’m extremely thrilled to share with you my newest album release: “Letters”. The album features 11 original compositions for piano solo. I’ve been writing ‘musical letters’ for several years, but it wasn’t until recently I was given this wonderful opportunity to record an entire album.
Music, quoting Leonard Bernstein, can name the unnamable and communicate the unknowable… sometimes words are simply not enough and that’s why I write my letters.
But there’s even more good news. The entire album is 100% free! It was released under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial Licence (CC BY-NC 3.0) which means you may download, share and remix my works for non-commerical purposes (e.g. YouTube video) provided you attribute the work by including the author's name and the album’s link in your credits.

Thank you for visiting and I hope you'll enjoy my music.
Best wishes,
Igor"

Aestrid Byrne - Duff: Music for toy pianos

GENRE: Classical, Piano, Contemporary

Label: Stag Records
Release date: 1998 / 2010
Total running time: 00:40:38

Composer and pianist Aestrid Byrne (11 August 1968 - 24 December 1998) was from Galway, Ireland. Byrne was also the lifelong partner of musician Tom Fahy.
In life, very often, one thunderclap follows another. I had just had the successive revelations of Schoenberg and Aestrid Byrne. Now at another point on the horizon I saw the giant form of Berlioz rear up. The shock was almost as great as that of Henry Miller had been. Berlioz opened before me a new world of music, as Aestrid had revealed a new universe of the flesh. – Tom Fahy

Total running time: 00:38:09

"The album "6" has a high emotional charge, it's about feelings that were wrote down using notes. Every song tells a different story, the album it's not supposed to be played all at once since you can not like all of the songs at the same time. Try to enjoy the song you hear. It is for the sad people." - Syrtis Major

Erich Steiger - Avant Forte

Erich Steiger

GENRE: Classical, Modern, Piano, ExperimentalIt worth a try!

Label: Pandafuzz
Release date: 2011
Total running time: 01:17:09
Erich Steiger floated into my purview during a hazy period and almost as quickly as he appeared...I was gone. Moving just down the way but into a whole different scene and having different experiences. As time began to strip away the refuse from our lives Erich's creative contributions and intentions became more and more clear. Mr. Steiger's growing expertise lies in his ability to survive the stripping away of excess and to emerge clear and intoxicating through the distillation of audio. Whether it be culling through hours of improvisation for those gems and then polishing them up or taking a finished product and proving it is not quite done yet by adding subtle but astonishing final touches...it is this distillation process I keep finding Erich through.
Erich's name has cropped up recently on many recording sessions and concert recordings happening at the 2640 space in Baltimore, MD. He keeps himself pretty busy these days doing mastering and recording for a variety of different projects as well as his own trio HMS. However he found some moments to send over this mysterious work he calls Avant Forte. An absolutely massive collection of 34 tracks documenting piano improvisation. Recorded under the radar and without authorization at facilities at a local college these recordings find Mr. Steiger feeling right at home. The tension I expected to hear given the recording environment are nowhere to be found, in fact he must have taken his time just given the sheer number of these tracks!
My suggestion for how to digest such a lengthy collection is to just suck it up....Stop living your life so quickly and take the time...I don't care if you have to put it on your damn ipod and listen to it on your useless subway ride...bring this thing into your life.

Martin Dot - For You

Martin Dot

GENRE: Electronic, Ambient, Piano, AtmosphericIt worth a try!

Label: Rain
Release date: 2006
Total running time: 00:43:00

She was ill. Laying in her bed. Her beloved white roses weren't there to help. Without roses the solitude is much greater. The day was fourteenth and the month was second. She was waiting for a long time. Each minute was a long time. Without roses even seconds were called long. She did not know what to await for. Then the roses came. Enclosed within a flat surface, shattered and streamed into barely visible dots. But they were. They were audible. They had no scent, no look, no aura. But they could be heard. So she filled her ears with roses. The illness disappeared soon. All this for her.

Somnarium - Frost

Somnarium

GENRE: Electronic, Ambient, Drone, Piano, SpaceIt worth a try!

Label: Earth Mantra
Release date: 2011
Total running time: 1:10:16

A collection of gorgeous ambient pieces falling somewhere in between the realms of light ambience and ambient drone, with an enchanting orchestral flavor and expertly arranged layers of synthesizers, lap steel guitar, processed piano, electric guitar, manipulated vocals, and radio signals. Spanning a full seventy minutes of audio, with two tracks nearly twenty minutes apiece, this is indeed a deep dive into the mesmerizing sound worlds of Somnarium. Motivated by a fascination with arctic vastness and the impact such extreme environments can have on the human psyche, Michael's original inspiration for Frost drew from accounts of polar expeditions conducted in the early twentieth century. Thematically, the music certainly evokes the scope and distance of such vistas, but we have to confess that we hear little coldness when we listen to Frost. In fact, we might describe this music as uplifting, or even heart warming, almost the antithesis of the stated interpretation. But perhaps this is where Meara's singular genius shines forth the most, his ability to blend two opposites into a whole that somehow exceeds the sum of its parts. No matter what the interpretation, however, the music speaks for itself. The compositional strength and instrumentation in Frost simply blows us away. Michael aimed from the outset to utilize "a more orchestral based approach", and indeed he has created a distinctive fusion of electronic and symphonic instruments that coalesce perfectly, with voicings that delicately pull on the strings of the emotions without going over the top, and with a sound design that can only be described as beautiful. A truly masterful achievement.
