Bosques de mi Mente - Colores

GENRE: Rock, Indie, Acoustic, Electronic

Label: Clinical Archives
Release date: 2011
Total running time: 00:39:59

Colores is the result of a process of experimentation that started after the release of “Inocencia” back in 2009. I decided then to experiment with toy instruments and keyboards, many of them bent or modified to alter their sound or to generate noise. I decided also to explore the posibilities of the voice and vocal harmonies, wordless sounds and chants used as another instrument, not to transmit a message. “Colores” is nothing but a simple album half-way between indie and electronic, easy listening and experimental music, past and future. The graphic design is the work of Juls Gars Menta, who added the collage of paintings and figures to the wonderful photographs of Antonio R. I am in debt with both for their collaboration in the project, and for making “Colores” a reality.

Lokua - Water Rock

GENRE: Electronic, Acoustic, Soundscape, Ambient

Label: Soft Phase
Release date: 2009
Total running time: 00:39:45

We’ll make a departure from our familiar nordic landscape, across the Atlantic, in order to welcome our new guest artist Lokua, all the way from Chicago, US. With the album “Trails“, released last year on the Moment Sound netlabel, Lokua displayed the versatility of his musical styles and fresh ideas. “Water Rock” is more focused on the deeper ambient tones and textures, here’s how the artist himself describes it:
“In comparison, Trails was like Summer, Water Rock is like Winter. The first is a little more outwardly pleasing, one can enjoy it without effort. I think to appreciate more ambient and experimental music one needs a certain level of imagination. It takes some concentration to fully appreciate the entirety of winter. What makes the cold unpleasant? How can I enjoy it? These are the sort of questions I was asking myself when composing the selections on Water Rock, only more music-techy like, how can these harsh unavoidable audio clips be made pleasing? Or maybe it’s just that Water-Rock was made in the winter, a time of introspection and isolation. In other words Trails was more-so geared towards head-nod-factor, whereas Water Rock was made by a fire while my toes defrosted.”

Guy Honeymoon - Summercramp

GENRE: Pop, Acoustic, Guitar

Label: No Source
Release date: 2011
Total running time: 00:25:15

Guy Honeymoon of Sheffield UK brings us nine songs of life, love, and getting through the day. Guy sticks to the basics with stripped down guy-and-guitar pop songs. The bells and whistles would just get in the way. The lyrics and vocal melody is the meat of Guy's work and the element that will immediately draw you into his music. This is the voice of a traveler, and a sincere one at that. Amelia, Hollow Hearts and Pocketknife were recorded with Andy Miller (Mogwai, Arab Strap, Scout Niblet) at Chem 19 in Hamilton, Scotland and the rest were recorded with Brian Waller in Cellardoor recording in Rotherham, England.

Ballpen – The dreams trilogy

GENRE: Electronic, Acoustic, Minimal, Easy Listening

Label: La bel netlabel
Release date: 2010
Total running time: 00:46:30

This music is based on how my dreams have been working throughout the years. The thing I like about dreams is that there are no schemes, no shames, no recipes and everything can happily or strangely cohabit with everything else. The way the songs are composed are similar to what I’ve expereinced in my dream so far. Like the hospital in my hometown turned upside down and placed in the middle of a race circuit, or me riding a turtle dressed up like Darth Vader, chasing my auntie along the dock of an unknown port in Malaysia. And other billions of strange and funny combinations of the puzzle- pieces of my life. And everybody’s life I suppose. Some of this dreams are made in a song form, some others are built like a possible dream would develop. Some vocal parts sound like somebody that’s sleep talking and the music is supposed to be what’s sonically going on in his/her head or you can hear that the music melts when somebody is falling asleep. And if you listen at a reasonable low volume you can still hear the music and what’s going on in the room next to yours at the same time. It’s very interesting. I swear.Apart from this, I also think that this music is good for your heart. And, by the way, this album has been recorded inside a cardboard box.

Petal - Up From Here

Petal

GENRE: Electronic, Acoustic, Ambient, DroneIt worth a try!

Label: Earth Mantra
Release date: 2011
Total running time: 00:48:42

With Up From Here, Jon takes his music to a higher level, retaining his breathtaking fusion of Americana and dark ambience, but adding an even more potent dose of bittersweet reminiscence, with even stronger visuals and evocative themes. Where his previous release blended Jon's various influences seamlessly, with Up From Here, the fusion is so complete that one cannot say with certainty where one influence ends and another begins. It all forms one inseparable innate whole, an assembly of fascinatingly articulate ambience unlike anything else we've heard. In fact, atop the obvious ambient structure, we would also call this music post-gospel. Not the kind of slick gospel that comes at you from a Hammond B3 or a Wurlie and a polished Stratocaster, but more like Libba Cotten Piedmont gospel, shuffling off into the twilight with two chords and no answers. Simple, sweet, plaintive and sad with the sadness you get when you hit bottom, hopeful with the hope that it's all up from here. Really profound stuff that hits home on multiple levels. As usual, Jon's process is almost as interesting as the music itself. For many of the pieces, he recorded string band quartet and quintet versions live, straight into the computer, and then decomposed them into ambient arrangements. Others, like Run to the Rock were improvisations that happened in the spur of the moment. Regardless of how he created it, the work stands tall on its own, the kind of ambient music that crosses so many boundaries that nearly everyone will find something to love.
